Arts Choice- Chorus and Band
The Arts Choice Program for all 5-8 students will begin Oct. 13 and will last for 10 weeks. This program offers each student the opportunity to focus deeply on a chosen area of the Arts, and to work with an artist/teacher from the greater community. I (Randi Kelly) will be returning to participate in this excellent program this year. If your child is interested in choosing Chorus or Rock Band, I need to hear from you BEFORE MON. OCT. 10 to be sure that you understand the time and financial commitments for the family. You can call (987-3236) or email me (rkelly1946@gmail.com). The students will be making their choices early that week at school.

This year Billy Miller and I will be teaching a combined Chorus and Band class. The band will NOT be a small garage band, but rather a class of all interested students who can already play an instrument (BASS, DRUMS, PIANO/KEYBOARD, OR GUITAR). Every member of the Chorus/Band will sing, and each song will utilize several band members for the instrumentation. Every Band member will play one or two songs, and and sing with the Chorus on the others. We will develop a repertoire of about 10 songs to perform at All School Meeting, at the Chorus/Band Dinner Concert (Date TBA), and on the Denver Performance Tour.

On the weekend of Nov.12 the entire group will go to Denver to see The Lion King at the Buell Theatre! We will also perform in Denver and have a packed full itinerary of fun and educational activities. The students will sell tickets for our Chorus/Band Dinner Concert (ACS GYM) to raise the money to cover all expenses for the Denver trip-Nov.11-13. We ask the families to support their child in raising at least $100 through ticket sales, help out with some of the food, and attend the Dinner Concert. You will also need to pay for the theatre ticket ($80 for front two rows of Mezzanine). There may be a limited number of partial scholarships. If this is a hardship, please discuss with Randi privately.

Please call me if you have any questions. There will be six other wonderful options for Arts Choice, including Bluegrass Band (Stuart), Ceramics (Kay Cesark), a Dance class, and several other exciting Arts classes to choose from. The 5-8 will present all Art Choice options in early October. This note is mainly to inform you of the Chorus/Band details so you will know what to expect. Please discuss the options with your child  and then let me know if Chorus/Band will be one of their choices.
They will each choose 3 options and then Stuart and Hilary will make the final selection. The first class will be Thursday Oct. 13, 1:00-2:30.

Thank you for reading and digesting all of this!!!

Welcome Back

August 9, 2011

Greetings 5-8 families!

We hope you are all enjoying summer. The five of us (Garry, Lou Rae, Billy, Ron and Darcy) have been scouring all the regions of the country, and random parts of the world, and are refreshing ourselves for the fun that lies ahead in the upcoming year. Hopefully you and your family are enjoying the same. As we look forward to the beginning of the school year we want to provide you with a few notes so that you can plan accordingly.

Ex Ed Notes: If you haven’t already, check the following link to see which Ex. Ed. trip your student is attending. Be in touch with your group leader regarding specific details for your trip including packing lists. Hut and backpacking trips will meet at school on Tuesday August 30, packed and ready to go. The Denver trip will meet in Glenwood. All trips will return to school by Friday Sept. 3.

Summer Homework: Hopefully students have been working slowly and consistently on the summer homework projects so that they don’t become too much of a headache here in August. In general, the homework is 30 minutes/week of www.ixl.com for math, and a journal of health related articles and reflections for Language Arts. Some students have been assigned to work on www.letsgolearn.com, based on individualized conversations. For complete details, see the same 5-8 general information page linked above.

In addition, each experiential education leader has prepared homework assignments relevant to their trips. Check with your group leaders for more details about these assignments.

The purpose of summer homework is to keep your skills sharp so that we can hit the ground running on the first day of classes. In conversations with many families, there is an initial dislike of the summer homework idea, but once kids take the time to do the work, they find that the beginning of the year is much more successful for their students. We look forward to discussing kids’ experiences with the summer homework when school begins.

Language Arts Supplies: We will provide fifth grade students and new families with the initial supplies of paintbrushes, scissors, pencils, and essential supplies. Consumable supplies will be replaced for all students, but items such as scissors and paintbrushes that were lost or broken will need to be replaced by returning students.

It is a good idea to put an optional art kit together for use at home. This helps students complete journals outside of class and gives the more options in managing class time in school. An acrylic paint set of primary colors plus black and white can be purchased in 6-ounce tubes. Other useful items include glue sticks, paint-brushes, matte varnish and scissors.

All students should have a three-ring binder or other organizational tool for Language Arts as well as a composition notebook.

Students need to bring headphones every day.  Ipod earbuds are fine.

5th Grade Summer Math Homework
SUMMER MATH HOMEWORK for INCOMING 5th GRADE STUDENTS

Purpose:
  • to prevent loss of math skills acquired during 4th grade year
  • practice and maintain computational fluency (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) of whole numbers
Assignment:
1. Get Summer Homework packet from Darcy before the start of summer vacation
2. Each week complete the assigned problems for the week. This typically includes 5-6 addition, subtraction, multplication and division problems as well as a blank multiplication facts table to complete.
3. Show all of your work. If you need additional space, get a notebook or composition journal, label the week and problem number, re-write the problem in the notebook and solve the problem showing all of your work.
4. You will not get any credit for this if you turn in answers only- you must show your work. The only problems you should be doing in your head are the multplication facts in the table.
5. Turn in packet and notebook used to show work on the first day of academic classes (not on the first day of outdoor ed)
6. On the first day of classes you will be given an assessment on skills practiced over the summer. There will also be a timed multiplication facts test. Students should be able to complete at least 20 multiplication facts in 3 minutes at the start of 5th grade.
